ABOUT
Torn between the desire to be heard and the wish not to add to all the noise, I reach out by sculpting wood. The energy of art is in the boundaries… figure and ground, bumps and hollows, light and shadow, silence and melodic phrase. Striving to ride that crest of a convex surface bending into concavity, the mermaids sing to me and I hope you will hear them as well.
Each piece is hand-tooled from a single block of hardwood, chisels and blades exposing the hidden legacy of growth rings as they arc across an artifice of curves. Hand-sanding to 600 grit enhances the reveal, and hand-finishing with tung oil and paste wax completes the tactile allure. Unless a base is required for stability, I intentionally leave the sculptures unmounted so they can be held as well as seen.
